Water polo is obviously a tough sport, right?

So why is the ball so small but the net is so big? I feel terrible for the goalie! The poor guy (or girl) is treading water like a fiend and their arms only reach across part of the goal! It just doesn't make sense to me. Anyone know why the net is so large?

  1. it's not only the goalie who is treading water the whole time. all the players have to stay afloat and they have to compete with the oppostion who are constantly trying to hold them under water. I played water polo for 3 years and earnt some bloodies scratches down my back and lungfulls of water from b*****s with long nails and strong arms. It is surprisingly dificult to loft ur elbow out of the water to thrust the ball with decent speed, so the goals have to compensate for his as well.

  2. The net isnt that big.. Really. Im a goalie. and we use our legs to jump up and reach each corner.

It does help if our legs and arms are LONG.

The net is probably the size it is because they dont want the goalie to be able to block it with almost all of themselves it would make it too hard for the other team to score.

  3. haha

    it doesnt bother goalies.

they can get across the nets pretty quickly if they are a good goalie.

and the vballs arenbt that small, they weigh about 1.7 lbs for a girls ball.

  4. Well, the game lasts for about an hour and on average each team scores 8 or so goals.  So I guess the size of the goals is reasonable.
