Water polo question re: caps

Is there something special about the caps worn by the water polo players? It appears they have something over the ears - does it keep water out yet allow them to hear their teammate's commands? I tried going on sites that sell the caps, but they don't reference the ear-covering parts. Just curious! It's obvious these guys are in awesome condition!
