Water pooling in my 700ft, clay soiled, blocked in back yard?

I have nowhere to send the inch or two of pooling water in the middle of my back yard. I do not have access outside of the perimeter of my yard to divert the water which forms for the 2days after it rains. My only choice is to dig a deep ditch at the lowest part of my clay soiled yard. What do I fill the ditch w/ and how deep???

  1. Dig your ditch narrow, and deep enough to drain the water away.Put in a 4inch plastic drain tile,... cover it

  2. I don't follow the other two answers.

    1.  Dig a trench, like answer #2 said and divert it out into the street to the front of your home.

    2.  Another options is to dig a dry well , fill it with river rock, 3/4 and see if that absorb it.

    3.  Where does the water from your gutters run.  Again, if they run out front, dig a drain and get rid of the water.

    4.  Talk to your neighbors and tell them of your problem.  Some will shake there heads and say "yes you have a problem, but others just might help."

  3. If the watershed is coming from the street and pooling up in your yard the street dept. should fix this problem... If it's not coming from the street you could dig a drainage ditch with field lines in the to disperse the water equally throughout the yard.

  4. You can dig a trench the width of a round point shovel, and dig it at least 18-24 inches deep.  I would guess that the length of the trench should be at least 6-10' long.

Now you need ti fill up the trench with 3/4" drain rock or gravel to about 3" below the grade of the existing soil.. Now on top of the drain rock that is 3" below the grade of the existing soil you need to install a piece of filter fabric on top of it. This is installed so that the mud and other contaminants do not get into the gravel and clog up it's function. After you installed the filter fabric on top of the gravel, add enough gravel to raise the grade of the gravel to level with the soil. This is basicily a french drain system that wil alllow the water to be absorbed by the drain rock and slowly perk into the soil below it..

    Hope this helps
