Question:

Water proofing Hamster Cage

I'm building a hamster cage, out of wood. Is there a way to safely water proof the wood so my hamsters don't get sick. If I do that, how long should I wait to put my hamsters in the cage?

  1. hamsters cannot live outdoors, the wooden cage will get stinky and dirty very quickly and learn to listen to what people have to say.

  2. Not to sure but if you know about that waterroofing stuff you put on your shoes then mabye you could try that?

Or just paint it with non-toxic paint! =]

  3. wrap your hampsters in seran wrap

  4. i have always used sticky backed plastic, its easy to stick new on if needed and is non toxic if chewed etc.

  5. Well Its not exactly the wood but it will make cleaning much easier In this i actually have two suggestions. My first one is linoleum as it is water proof and all you would need would be a Wet cloth with soap to wash it  out.

My second suggestion is Coroplast As you could make a little tray to pull out of the cage and with the sides it wouldnt fly out causing a mess on your floor. To tell you more about how to deal with Coroplast Check out this site. Even though its for gueini pigs. it will tell you how to cut it correctly) http://www.guineapigcages.com

I have read through his question several times and have found now were in the sentance that this person  wants to put them outside.

They is most likley putting "water proof" with a water bottle dripping or urine from the hamsters. As both could be absorbed into the wood. causing an unpleasent aroma in the hamster cage. that could in time lead to an upper respitory infection.

Hope i could be helpful.  hope the cage works

  6. Hamsters will need to be inside in the winter. They shouldn't be outside. I'd suggest a rabbit.
