Several window sills inside the house had signs of water damage (sills were bulging in some areas). So today I pulled those sills of, and it appears that the water is coming in from the bottom of the window. I just don't know how this could be happening. Any ideas as to what is going on and/or how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  1. More than likely the water is coming in from the top or sides on the outside and running down to the bottom of the window/sill.  Check on the outside and make sure everything is caulked properly and or that all trim pieces are attached properly.

  2. If u don't want to spend too much money.  U should check the entire window 1 at a time and locate the crack or opening where the moisture/ water coming in.  U should purchase some window caulking..(clear type) and apply some on.  Depends if ur house is wooden or stucco...the principal is same.  Moisture is coming and u need to keep it out.  Start from the top and work ur way down.  Just like the water did...from top, work its way down.

  3. It sounds like they weren't flashed properly.  The flashing diverts the water (rain) so it isn't able to run down the sides and leech into the framing, and ultimately to the inside.  Takes awhile to get inside so this may have been going on for several years.

The windows need to be replaced, and, maybe some of the frame work.

    Good luck!

  4. If you live in an old house, things tend to slope to one side.  So the window frame might be uneven, letting in water that has gathered up somewhere.
