  1. In the long run, you are always better to water deeply, because you want your water to go deep into the ground and cause the roots to grow deep.  When your grass is established, it will have deep roots and be more drought resistant.  For new plants, this time of year, whew, you'd better water deeply every day, because it's going to be 100+ until September, and you've got to keep those babies damp until they are established!

  2. Water as seldom as you can get away with, but increase the interval, don't decrease the water.  You want the water to go deep.

Torture it with some experiments.  Start with 20 minutes every third day and see if the grass likes it. Then switch to 40 minutes every 5 days and see what happens.

If you have clay soil, you may have to water 20 minutes, wait an hour, water 20 minutes.

  3. The best way to water is deeply and infrequently.  That is water 40-60 minutes depending on your soil type 2-3 times per week.     allowing a day or two in between waterings.  By watering deeply you encourage the roots to grow deep and if you are watering every day you are going to have shallow rooted grass.
