If i were to water my lawn at 3am and because there is no sunlight out at that time the water has time to soak into the soil very deep...whent he sun does come out later in the day will the grass have little chance to soak in the water since it will have vacated deep into the soil far from the grass roots and so the grass will be missing one of its important elements for growth: water?

So...the question is...by watering too early in the night will the water vanish too deep into the soil that when the sun is out to start photosynthesis, the water element for the grass will be much lower than needed because it has vacated far below the grass roots in the soil?

  1. If you water your lawn heavily and infrequently (once or twice a week at most) they will develop deep roots and handle the water well.

You are unlikely to water and have it go far below the roots unless you are in sandy soil and water too often.

Photosynthesis isn't affected by when you water.

However, if you water in the middle of the day, the water will just evaporate.

I forget which, but if you water in the late evening or maybe early morning, there is a chance of mildew forming because the surface is wet.

  2. Your grass is a great army of smart water drinkers. They will drink when they are thirsty.

If you have poor quality soil, you will need to water more frequently though because the grass does not have a reservoir for storing water.

3AM is early but better than 10PM.

  3. No worries!  That is actually the best time to water your lawn.  The air is still then, so it stays on your lawn instead of being blown about by the wind.  Also, there is no evaporation from the sun.  Water deeply and infrequently.  It will encourage the roots to grow deep.  Which makes for a healthier lawn.  Your lawn should receive about an inch of water a week, in one or two waterings <depending on how hot the weather is>

Good luck, you are doing everything right!
