Question:

Watering plants with carbonated water

We're having this discussion at home.

Plants breath in carbon dioxide and breath OUT oxygen.

As this is the case, would watering them with carbonated water be beneficial in any way to the plant?

We're not looking to do this, but curious as to the outcome...

  1. This would be a waste and would not work. Plants get plenty of gaseous carbon dioxide for the air through tiny pores on the leaves. The CO2 in carbonated water would not be accessible to the leaves, even if you poured it over them - only to the roots. The carbon fixation processes are not rate-limited by the availability of CO2, but by the amount of sunlight, the amount of leaf, etc.

In addition, carbonated water is slightly alkaline and this will affect the pH of the soil, which would probably have negative consequences.

  2. The leaves are what breathes, so carbonated water would have no impact on them.  And when you think about it, the carbonation goes "flat" when exposed to the elements, so I believe it would have no impact on the plant, but plenty on your wallet!

  3. carbonated water? are you nuts?

just imagine watering your plants with coke.

    lol ..

  4. Plant roots need air..it is the foilage that does the breathe in co2 and releases air..this is why it is healthy to use a aerator on a lawn now and then  or turn your soil..the roots need airr and the plants will die if they do not have it..But in actuality, carbonated water is good for plants, and co2 contains air and stimulates the roots....So yes you can use it..and it is good..but not for the reason of them needing co2 as you asked about..read this
