Question:

Watermelons growing on fence??

So, I planted watermelons almost two months ago. I can see the fruit and it's getting bigger every day. They're at about 5 lbs right now. The prob is, the vines go up my fence, and then the watermelons grow on those vines. I'm used to seeing watermelons growing on the ground, so I'm wondering, when these watermelons get bigger, around 15-20 lbs, will they fall off, or will the vines still be able to support them?

And if they are going to fall, what can I do to make sure the finish growing first? (as in something to hold them up.) Help from an expert is appreciated. Thanks =]

  1. Duckfish is basically right however do not use panty hose for watermelons for they will stretch with the weight..Use a good thick cloth that will not stretch and tear of pieces and tie to each side of each fruit onto the fence and support them with..they should look like a small hammock with a watermelon sitting in them.. A good strong sheet tore in pieces should hold them

  2. the vines will not support the melons so you will need to support them with slings if they are growing up a fence.  You can make slings out of lots of different things, like old nets or pantyhose.  Something that will breath but will support it.  Put your melon in the sling and tie it to its support.  If the fence it is growing on will not be able to support it, you might want to get a support for it like a sturdy trellis.

  3. If you cannot get the vines on the ground you will need to put support under them.

Getting them on the ground would be the best option.

If you have to support them maybe attach something substantial to the fence or build a bench or tables and put hay or straw about 1 or 2 inches thick to prevent rotting or severe flat side on bottom.

I'm not a watermelon expert but I am growing some.
