Watford beat Ipswich town 3-0 to close in on play-off position - Npower Championship
Watford beat Ipswich Town 3-0 in an Npower Championship encounter at Portman Road on Tuesday evening. The result moved the Hornets into eighth place in the league table and reduced the gap for a Championship playoff place.
Ipswich manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paul-c29347 Jewell made three changes to the starting line-up that played out a 0-0 draw against Leeds United over the weekend. New signing Kieron Dyer was replaced by Jimmy Bullard in midfield.
On the other hand, Malky Mackay made several changes to his team following their recent 3-0 win over Sheffield United. Danny Graham started upfront in a 4-5-1 formation for the visitors.
The game got off to an incredible start as the visitors took the lead in just the second minute. Graham’s effort was well blocked by the defender but the rebound fell kindly for Troy Deeney, who buried his shot into the bottom corner of the goal to make
it 1-0.
Moments later, Ipswich came extremely close to scoring an equaliser, when Connor Wickham did well to beat two defenders but ended up smashing his shot wide of the goal.
Bullard almost equalised for the hosts again in the 17th minute when his free kick from 20-yards out smashed against the cross bar to deny Ipswich. Both teams created several opportunities on goal in the first half but in vain. The visitors were
the better of the two sides, as they dominated 55 percent of the possession in the first half and also took an early lead.
The second half got off to a slow start as compared to the first 45 minutes. Both teams were sloppy in possession and could not create decent openings. The Hornets enjoyed a good spell of possession after the hour mark and doubled their lead. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Danny-c10193 Graham
skipped past two defenders and slotted a powerful shot into the net to give Watford a 2-0 lead. This was Graham’s 24th goal of the 2010-11 season for Watford.
The hosts tried hard to pull a goal back and get themselves into the game. They came close to doing it but Wickham’s header from Carlos Edward’s cross went inches wide of the right post.
The visitors looked in complete control of the game and sealed the tie with a goal in the last minute. Don Cowie tried an audacious effort from outside the penalty area which found the bottom corner of the net to make it 3-0 for the visitors.
Watford will play Middlesbrough in their next fixture on 19th March, while Ipswich Town host Scunthorpe United the same day.
