Supposedly, on 2012, the world is supposed to end. This prediction comes from the Mayan calender. Scientifically, on December 21st, 2012, a galactic event called galactic alignment is supposed to happen. When this happens, all of the planets will be lined up. So, no. The sun will not explode and neither will the world. I too am not complietly sure what is to occur, but I have done a lot of research on it. Acording to "the bible code", it says that earth might be hit by an astriod or it also says: end of days. If you want to learn more about 2012, google it. I have listed two great sites in my sources. Take heed for 2012 is just the revealing of the 'antichrist' or the 'man of lawlessness' at the middle of what Jews and Christians call the 7 year Tribulation. Many pagan cultures from every corner of the world (Sumerians, Babylonians, Cherokee, Hopi, Chinese I-Ching {confirmed by T.McKenna}, Mayans{Pacal Votan}, Egyptians, Celts, Satanists, etc...) celebrate this evil event called "the abomination that causes desolation". When will Yeshua Ha'Mashiach (Jesus) come? Only God Himself knows, but soon. If you believe or not, that is up to you. Either way it still comes.

Is that ALL you heard? Here are others I have seen people seriously post to this forum.

The sun will align with the center of the galaxy, wreaking havoc.

The planets will align, wreaking havoc.

Mars will throw earth out of orbit.

A huge meteoroid or asteroid will collide with earth.

Planet X will collide with earth.

Nibiru will pass close to earth, wreaking havoc.

The Annunaki people from Nibiru will invade earth.

After all this, a new age of peace and enlightenment will begin, so supposedly it’s not as bad as it sounds, all things considered.

Aside from being disasters, there are some other things that they all have in common. First, they are all total bunk. Not one legitimate scientist anywhere is predicting any of these for 2012. They all come from quacks and crackpots. Second, they all gained attention after the History Channel repeatedly aired its absurd documentary falsely claiming that the Mayans predicted the end of the world for 2012. The astronomical alignments and dire physical predictions claimed in the film are also bogus.

Edit: What Tim D has told you is a typical regurgitation of the wacko BS I referred to, and he has so kindly linked you to the idiotic web sites that promulgate this malarkey. I KNOW the astronomy, and what he says is pure bunk.  There is no planetary alignment. There is no alignment with the center of the galaxy. If either of these were true, it would have absolutely no effect on us anyway. The sun's apparent path in the sky does cross the galactic equator on that date: like it does on Dec. 21 EVERY year. (It also crosses on the summer solstice, 180 degrees away from this.)

the Mayan calendar was designed to be cyclical, so the fact that the long count comes to an end in Dec 2012, while having some significance for the Maya as the end of a great cycle (much like we celebrated the millennium (incorrectly as it happens) on Dec 31st 1999), does not mean that the "world will come to an end". It's actually true that there are Mayan names for periods of time longer than 13 bactuns, so that their calendar doesn't even end then, and even if it did there is no evidence to suggest that they (or anyone for that matter) have any special knowledge about the end of the world.

There are however a lot of theories knocking around the Internet which use the end of this calendar cycle to predict the end of the world. They often also mention the fact that Dec 21st is the winter solstice, and that the Sun on the solstice that year is "aligned" with the plane of the galaxy. On the winter solstice, the Sun always has a Declination of -23.5 degrees, and a Right Ascension of 18 hours, but exactly where this is on the sky relative to more distant stars changes very slowly due to the "precession of the equinoxes".

Nothing spectacular will happen in 2012 (unless you count the Olympics in London).

It is just a myth which mysteriously propagates (mostly because of the History Channel and YouTube)

The Mayan culture/society/way of life is long since dead

Therefore as an end to "the world" 2012 was a wildly optimistic estimate for them!

And anyway – that is the wrong interpretation of the whole calander thing – it’s just the end of a cycle. And since calendars are based on astronomical motions of one kind or another, they are inherently cyclic.

Planet X/Nibiru does not exist. If it did we would have found it by now. We have mapped the sky in the infrared several times in the last 25 years (ncluding WMAP, IRAS etc), and it would show up. It is not there. We would have found it if it existed. So all the nonsense about the return of Nibiru/Planet X is just that – nonsense

Furthermore, at the distance it must be to hit us in a little over 4 years, it would be reflecting enough light from the sun to be detectable.

Thanx to previous question from Brant and answer from bikenbeer2000, we know how bright it should be by now – it would have a apparent magnitude of 7.4 – which would not be visible with the naked eye – but easily visible in a modest telescope and would have been spotted by amateur. If there was a conspiracy to keep it quiet – it would be out of the bag by now.

Ask someone where it is supposed to be, get a pair of binoculars and look for it.

The videos on YouTube that purport to have evidence are disingenuous to say the least. They put together pictures of other objects (e.g. Jupiter, comets even a dust shell around a distant red giant star) and try to scare people. There is no validity to their claims. They present NO EVIDENCE at all.

As for the predicted catastrophes – the most popular one seems to be the Pole Shift!

The sun will have a pole reversal that year – it has one every 11 years – it is not a problem.

The earth’s magnetic field is less predictable –

but is still nothing to worry about: we know that the magnetic field does not collapse in the process of reversing polarity- if it did, there would be major extinctions that correlate with the geologic record for pole reversals - there is no correlation.
