Preppy is a lifestyle thing.  It really has nothing in common with Abercrombie or any other mall stores like that.  You live a preppy life, and so you can't just decide to be preppy =]  It has to do with your family, friends, money, relations, connections, and history.

Preppiness originated up in the East Coast with kids who attended prep schools.  Hence the name.  Exeter (yes, we are the best), Andover, and St. Paul's are the big three.  The word preppy doesn't only refer to the always-timeless classic way that the students there dress, but also how they lie.  Yachting and tennis are very common.  You've got to have a place where you summer.  The Cape is usually a nice choice.

Now back to the clothing.  A preppy clothing style will never go out of fashion.  Traditionally preppy stores include Vineyard Vines, J. Crew, J. Press, Brooks Brothers, The Black Dog, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, LL Bean, and Lily.  Once again, NO mall stores =]

I would say preppy is more like girls that wear a lot of Hollister and Abercrombie t-shirts, polos and hoodies. Girly would be girls that wear more skirts and dresses and heels and always look fancy!

Pretty sure in high school preppy means hollister and abercrombie, nobody knows or cares about the origin of "true" preppiness in high school!

depends on how you define preppy. the true meaning of preppy are people who wear ivy league college style clothes. it is a little bit more of a boyish look. abercrombie and holister aren't truly preppy. girly is just like lots of dresses, ruffles, ribon, and bows. go to rugby.com to see real preppy clothes. i love their stuff
