It is not vital to have a large height in tennis but it can be very beneficial if you do. The most important shot that height can have a large factor on is the serve. The taller a person is the more clearance over the net they have when they serve and the better chance they have to get the ball over the net more consistently than that of a normal height person. Also, the taller they are the more speed and power they can generate from their longer legs. For example, Venus Williams, who is 6'1", has the fastest serve in the game (125mph on average). Serena Williams who has a larger upper-body thah Venus, but is 5'8", consistently serves in the 115-118 range. This shows that height does matter, but is not imperative to have a good tennis game, i.e. Justine Henin.
