Watson tops Ryder Cup standings after second place finish at Travelers
Bubba Watson has said that he will not be playing any tournament till the Open. Well, in fact, he does not need to either. After his second place finish at the Travelers, the Masters champion is now leading the Ryder Cup points table for the Team USA.
Watson has just over thrown Jason Dufner to claim the top spot.
The Ryder Cup team will be announced some time towards the end of August, or in the first week of September.
Bubba Watson has enough points to earn him a Ryder Cup spot even if he misses a few tournaments.
Team USA’s selection process is quite different from the Team Europe’s. In Team USA, the standings are made on the basis of prize money earned.
Two points are given for every $1000 in the major championships and one point is given for every $1000 earned on the tour apart from the major Championships.
All USA players who make the cut in the tournaments are awarded points.
The top eight players in the list are given an automatic spot in the team, while the last four are handpicked choices of the team captain. The Team USA will be led by Davis Love III.
Ryder Cup remains one of the top most events of the golf world and is played once in two years. Players play for pride not for money, and it is probably every American’s and European’s dream to play in this event.
The tournament is very unique in terms of the playing style. It all started with one exhibition match back in 1926, and since then, it has been a battle of supremacy between Europe and America over the golf world.
Among the other notable players hopeful to secure a Ryder Cup spot are: Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, Jim Furyk, Bill Haas, and Steve Stricker.
All the these players are not far behind in the points table but if they fail to make it to the top-eight, they will have to rely on USA Team captain, Davis Love III, to be kind to them.
If the likes of Tiger Woods and Zach Johnson are to stay in the top eight then they must perform well in the upcoming tournaments.
