The Black Yellows’ general manager insisted that several fringe players will leave the German side, adding that the team needs more depth in their squad to compete for major honours
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Hans-Joachim Watzke has stressed that the Bundesliga outfit will judge it's current squad over the winter break, and will definitely look for quality additions in the January transfer window.
He also hinted that a number of players will depart the reigning German champions.
The chief claimed that the BVB are under-equipped for the whole campaign and will need reinforcements in order to mount a title challenge and fight for other trophies.
The 53-year-old has echoed that the defending champions need a couple of top players to fight at every front, as they are competing for the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League and DFB-Pokal. They won the German double last year beating
fierce rivals Bayern Munich in both competitions.
The club official stated that some unneeded players will be let go if the club thinks that it is in their interests, and provided they sign their transfer targets. He suggested that if the Borussians want to top the Bundesliga
ranking, they will have to get better squad players who will be the impact stars for them.
As a result, Dortmund will need a strong bench who can replace or fill-in for the first-team players in case of injury, bad form or suspensions. Watzke said that there are two matches to close the gap on league leaders Bayern before
the winter break, and after that the board members will decide after analysing the performance until then.
"If we want to be in the first places of the table permanently, we have to improve in terms of the players 12 to 18," the director of sport was quoted as saying in an interview.
"There are two games left. Afterwards we will analyse the first half of the season," the general manager finally concluded.
