Waves sweep Bears with 5-0 record at the Sand Volleyball Classic – Volleyball news
The women’s beach volleyball teams of Pepperdine University, commonly labelled as Waves, whitewashed the Bears of Mercer University at the weekend.
The two sides met at the Sand Volleyball Tournament hosted by College of Charleston. The Waves totally dominated the opponents and finished the final day with a wonderful 5-0 record. On top of it, they did not lose a single set in the five matches.
In the day opener, wonderful team of Summer Ross and Caitlin Racich played under the tag of Pepperdine. They were joined by the duo of Jamie Duffy and Cassie Roy, which failed to take up the challenge. Ross/Caitlin proved the steel of their arms in the first
frame and delivered unstoppable spikes.
The Bears could not overcome the strong opponents and dropped opening set of the match at 7-21. The second set unfolded the same story as Waves led the scores all the way from start to end. They closed second set at 21-10 and bagged the first victory of
the day.
Ross and Racich contributed 18 and nine kills in the match. Additionally, Ross was also credited for her 16 digs and Racich added four aces that played big role in their victory.
In the next match, two different teams made it to the centre court. Kim Hill and Lilla Frederick of Waves crossed their ways with Bears’ Monica Sanchez and Jennifer Katona. The Pepperdine team proved to better attack and defence, which allowed them to send
Bears to 0-2 (13-21, 14-21) loss in the match. The success of Waves was mainly due to the combined effort of both players. They totalled 21 kills and five aces, in order to seize victory.
Stevi Robinson and Kelly Larsen of Waves breezed past the Caroline Carlton and Emily Rochefort of Mercer in the third match Sand Volleyball Tournament at the Charleston College. The Mercer Bears dropped both sets with identical score of 13-21, while the
particular Pepperdine team completed the winning streak of five matches. Robinson and Larsen have developed a great chemistry between them and seem to continue with their winning ways in the upcoming matches.
Bears’ Zoe Becton and Madison Petsos went against Victoria Adelhelm and Kellie Woolever of Waves in the fourth encounter of the day. Nothing could change the status of Mercer as Becton and Petsos also dropped the decision in Waves’ favour. They ended up
with final score of 9-21, 15-21 and accepted defeat in the match.
The final fixture of the day brought Emily Cook and Michaela Christiaansen of Waves in contest with Charlayna Braxton and Lizze Knapper. The Waves improved to 5-0 after beating the Bears with 2-0 (21-9, 21-6) in the fifth match.
In the next run, the Pepperdine University is scheduled to host dual matches from April 5-7. Teams from USC and Long Beach State will join the Waves in the competition.
