Question:

Waving at other motorcyclists?

So, soon after I bought a motorcycle (about a year ago), I noticed other bikers waving at me on the road, so I started waving when I saw bikers. (not really waving, just kinda sticking my hand out there) I imagine it's something lots of people do, and I was wondering, do people extend the same courtesy to people on scooters?

  1. I do, even though it usually just confuses them.

  2. Yep.  Wave to any gas-powered two-wheeler that's street legal and is on the street.

  3. I wave to them all.  We are out there riding for the same reasons, fun mainly but fuel economy also.  Why not wave to the scooter guys?

  4. they slide there hand to the side. i dont know about the scooters though.

  5. "Folks is folks"

Gee, the first bunch to answer this question don't sound very friendly. I was happy to see the latter bunch pipe in.

I ride a 1600cc- A LOT! If someone is on the highway on two wheels, I want to "say howdy". Shoot, I even wave to people on bicycles when I can do it safely. Afterall, isn't this sport all about feeling good? Come on, kids. Let's get away from the snobbery. Sports bikes? Cruisers? Scooters? When the ride is over and we all meet at the watering hole, will you ask a pretty lady if she rides a scooter before you decide to ask her to dance with you?

To quote Jack Nickolson in Mars Attacks, "Why can't we all just get along?!?"

  6. I wave all the time at anyone on two wheels regardless of make, model, tank badge etc. etc. and yes I even wave at scooters!  Anything on two wheels (or if you include the trikes and the new Can-Am Spyder) is not a car that is trying to kill me so therefore they are my compadre! :)

  7. Sport bike riders wave at other sport riders but not to custom/Harley riders.

Custom/Harley riders wave to other custom/Harley riders but not to sports bike riders.

    And nobody waves to scooterers.

  8. I agree with david, except In california cruisers, wave at sport tourers as well.

Scooters are just lame compared to bikes.

  9. If I see a scooter out in the rain or snow, or really cold weather, I 'll wave. Not too many people to wave to from Nov. to Feb. in my neck of the woods.

  10. whats a scooter.... is more of a biker thing sorry scooter not on the list but you can smile and point

  11. I started riding about a year ago myself. During the MSF course, they really stressed the "community" aspects of motorcycling and encouraged recognition of other riders through a friendly wave. I have continued that practice and regularly wave at all other two-wheel vehicles. There is certainly some "snobbery", if you wish to call it that, from motorcyclists to scooters, but I believe that's either a mucho macho perspective or a personal preference. I say "welcome" whether you're on a V-Rod or a Vespa. Cheers!

  12. There is a law that only hot chicks are allowed to ride scooters.  Of course I wave.  Even to scooter guys because they are riding with an ear to ear smile.  Unlike the pretentious dorks on Harleys trying to practice their tough guy scowl.

  13. Eh. It depends. People with scooters wave at other people with scooters....But I wouldn't think a person with a motorcycle would wave at a person on a scooter...I know that I don't.

  14. I wave when I am waved at, at least when I have a hand free to do it. I think it's polite and it adds to the sport. I don't usually initiate the wave though. When I see a scooter rider wave at me, I always wave back. Who knows? That wave could be seen as an invitation to step up to the real thing. I bet lots of scooter riders would buy a motorcycle if they weren't worried about getting a license.

The more riders the better as far as I am concerned! I will wave to anybody.

  15. I wave to most motorcycles and scooters. And, when I'm on my scooter, my wave usually gets returned. The angry-looking tough guys on their $25,000 choppers don't wave back, but I figure they must be thinking about making their next bike payment and that's why they're so upset. :)

  16. I've been riding for quite a long time. I don't make waving or a hand

gesture a habit when I am in areas where I am paying attention to

4 wheel vehicles that are heavy enough to kill me if I get hit. But when

I'm off the main roads and the road is open, I'll always make a hand jesture if one comes my way or I may even initiate one myself. I don't

care what you are riding. If you've got two wheels and handlebars, you

are a rider to me...If you decide not to wave to me or me to you, don't take it personal, just remember I may or may not stop to help you out when you are on the side of the road someday, so again, don't take that personal either.

Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Rider for 20 years....

  17. I wave to everybody! I have found that scooter riders seem surprised when I wave to them- or they are uncomfortable taking a hand off the steering bar. As for the idea that like sport bikes only wave to sport bikes and cruisers to cruisers, I haven't seen that to be the case at all. Maybe it's just an Ohio/KY/WV/TN/NC/IN/ILL/MO thing, but in all of those states, those catching wind wave at others catching wind.

I also wave to little kids on Big Wheels that wave to me, Seniors that are in wheel chairs, police officers, and road workers. Being friendly is just me being me.
