I've often wanted to play old games such as Descent between friends when each of us are at home. One problem: old games often DON'T support network game connections outside a local network.

Is the any software or technique I can use to map an remote ip address to a local IE 192.168.1.x address?

  1. Connect the machines together by VPN:

Once the machines are all on the same virtual private network it will act as you wish.

If you face your machine directly to the Internet you open your computer to direct attack.  The game play itself is not, per se, a security risk; it is instead front facement of your machine which creates the risk.

  2. VPN is quite drastic. As you will encrypt all your data and it will become very slow.

If both of you are on the internet you will both have a public ip address. This address will be that of your pc if you are using a modem or that of your router.

In case it is a router, you will have to configure a feature called nat (translate a local ip to a public ip)

Having said this, I am still skeptic about the speed of the connection On a local network you get up to 10 mbps at least. On internet we are talking about what speed? (1 or 2 mbps) You can give it a try.
