Way to find out if someone is deceased?

Question

My father called me tonight wanting me to research online about one of his aquaintances. One of my father's aquaintances is rumored to have lost his life by being involved in a gang related shooting. I only know the man's name, age and where he went to college. Is there any online resource where you can look up obituaries or something similar?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!

***btw: yahoo suggested this category so I don't know if there is a better one to ask this question ;)

Usually when I want to know.. i google it. then, most of the time, i will find who I was looking for.

It won't be in the Social Security Death Index for a couple of months.

check the city he lives in-- the local news paper--obit section- crime section--local news in that city--example latimes.com---might not be in the paper for a day or two after the fact--
