Question:

Way to go CBC?

What the h**l? CTV/TSN has pulled the rug from under CBC. Thanks to the outright ignorance of CBC the HNIC song will no longer be played on CBC. Instead CTV/TSN will have the rights to it. Way to go CBC. Now some cut rate hockey coverage network has one of the greatest songs and will no doubt incessantly run it into the ground like they do everything else on that reject of a network. Am I the only one cheesed by this? http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=240196&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_main

  1. its really dumb, its a good way to steal CBC viewers though

"...will utilize the song as part of its hockey coverage during the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games."

    more viewers, more $$$

  2. Yeah im pretty mad about it! its a stupid idea but atleast the song got saved!

  3. Actually, I am happy that CBC did not waste money on the darn song.  I am a little cheesed of that the author got her way.  She had CBC over a barrel and the refused to give in to her exorbitant demands.  TSN can do what they want as it is their money not a public broadcaster like the CBC supported by our tax dollars.

Kinda low of TSN to go out and get it.  Well at least all those lovers of the song get to her it every time TSN has a game.

As to the CBC they lost me years ago when they started showing pretty much Leafs only games.  Then the french side of the CBC gave up on hockey altogether a few years back.

There is too much money at stake in the game now for a public broadcaster to cover it anyway.  They cannot compete with TSN in terms of production analysts etc.  An analyst at TSN covers multiple games per week/Jr hockey/ international tournaments etc so they can afford the big$$ to hire the best.  CBC does one game a week.

So is this the beginning of the end of CBC as a viable hockey broadcaster?  No its probably the end of the beginning.  We are well along the road.

  4. I was confused when I heard about this.  CTV is going to be the only broadcast network to air football (and that will be the NFL only).  Now they bought the HNIC song?  Will CTV now be airing HNIC as well?

What the hay is going on?

  5. All we need now is for Don Cherry to go to TSN... How sweet would that be.... TOTAL PACKAGE!

  6. I agree 288 coaches corner is probably the next to get the axe, they should clear out the excessive executives in the CBC & spend the cash where it will get them viewership, not turn away viewers, sounds backwards to me, but i'm not a highly paid executive i guess.

  7. This is just wrong. I'm pissed...that song should be on HNIC not TSN!

  8. Wow. As shocking as this is, you have to tip your hat to TSN for being on the ball. Crafty maneuver.

  9. i dont got a problem with TSN having rights to it... they do a good job for broadcasting. CBC just pulled a move like the Sabres waiting til the end and someone else sweeping in with more money

  10. I do not know in what context the original poster is saying that TSN is 'cut rate'. I will however agree, that if the context is that TSN is an poor excuse for a hockey network, I wholeheartedly agree. Regardless if they own all the equipment in the arenas and what not, they really suck at what they do on air. The production behind the scenes is not that bad, as LITY was pointing out, but the yapping morons that are on air are HORRID. I cringe when Pierre starts talking. Bob McKenzie and everyone else that covers the NHL also suck so much balls its redicolus. So I see where you are coming from at being 'cheesed' about TSN getting something as sacred as that song.

  11. Why be cheesed?

    1)  CBC did the right thing.  You can pay pennies for royalties on a new song.

    2)  TSN is not a cut rate hockey network, almost all the production for both networks is done by the same people and most of the cameras and equipment used in the 5 Canadian arenas belongs to TSN

    3)  This song does not attract viewers to hockey games.  In the early 80s CBC ditched it for a year or two...............ratings didn't change.

Also, I wouldn't say CTV/TSN pulled out the rug.  The CBC is run by the government, they are allowed a certain expenditure.  This song is not covered by those expenditures (nor should it be).  So, they threw the song back into the sea for whomever wants it.  TSN decided they wanted it,  and went after it.

CBC didn't lose Chris Cuthbert, they fired him.  He has a lawsuit against CBC citing wrongful dismissal because they have yet to inform him why he was fired.

  12. I think this is the first not-so-subtle sign that CBC is going downhill in terms of it being a "national" broadcaster. They lost the Olympics, Cuthbert, and now the theme song to TSN. I wouldn't be surprised if they lost Coach's Corner once McLean's and Cherry's contracts are up. I don't think anybody there knows what they're doing anymore.

  13. I agree, it's a traveshamockery!  HNIC will never be same.  I can't wait to hear Don Cherry's season-opening rant about this come October!

  14. I now can see why the folks in Montreal rioted after round 1. If every one makes such a big hoopla about this stupid song, what else are Canadians capable of?

"Oh my God!, the price of Kraft Dinner went up 48 cents, lets burn cop cars!"
