Wayne Odesnik defeats Evgeny Donskoy 6-3, 6-3
World number 159 Wayne Odesnik of USA dismissed world number 156 Evgeny Donskoy of Russia in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals at the Levine, Gouldin & Thompson in Binghamton on Friday. The match lasted for one hour and
30 minutes.
Odesnik and the Russian held their serve in the first seven games of the first set to take the score to 4-3 in the American’s favour. Odesnik hit a couple of forehand winners to break Donskoy in the eighth game and held his serve
in the next game to claim the set 6-3. The 25-year-old grabbed fifteen of the nineteen first service points in the opening set.
The American carried the winning momentum into the second set, breaking Donskoy in the fifth game and consolidating on it to grab a 4-2 lead. Odesnik broke his opponent again in the ninth game, clinching the second set 6-3. The
Weston, Florida resident delivered 65 percent of the first serves and three aces in the second set. The American captured seven of the 24 first return points and converted two of the eight break points in the second set.
Odesnik will meet top seed Izak Van Der Merwe of South Africa in the semi-finals.
Paul Capdeville beats Carsten Ball 7-6(4), 6-4
Chilean Paul Capdeville, ranked 116th in the world, prevailed over world number 295 Carsten Ball of Australia in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-4 to secure his place in the last four. The match lasted for an hour and 24 minutes.
Capdeville and the Australian served quite well as they held their serve throughout the first set to tie the score at 6-6 and took the set to a tie-break. The Chilean played brilliantly at the net to bag a couple of mini-break
and consolidated on them to win the tie-break 7-4. The Vitacura resident delivered one ace and captured 23 of the 29 points on the first serve in the opening set.
The six feet and three inches tall succeeded in breaking Ball in the seventh game of the second set and consolidated on it to grab a 5-3 lead. Capdeville capitalised on the only break of serve and served out the set in the tenth
game, capturing it 6-4. The Chilean fired three aces and capitalised on one of the two break points he received on Ball’s serve in the second set.
Capdeville is slated to take on world number 130 Grega Zemlja in the semi-finals.
