Wayne Odesnik flogs Sebastian Decoud in 2nd round – Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011
Fifth seeded American Wayne Odesnik cut the winning streak of Argentinean Sebastian Decoud in the second round of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
At Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador, the two old fangled rivals locked into an encounter against each other on clay courts. After two hours and twenty one minutes the fifth seeded American ousted the Argentinean by surviving a mid match fall of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 on Wednesday the 23rd of November 2011.
Odesnik decided to serve first as he had won the service toss and he got off to a great start as he capitalized on a breakpoint in the second game to take a mini lead. However, he further extended his lead to three games to love at the end of the third game.
In the following two games the players bagged a service game each and the score had shifted to 4-1 at the end of the fifth game. However, in the sixth game Decoud held his serve and then broke his adversary to reduce the deficit to 3-4 at the end of the seventh game. With a hold of serve in the eighth game, Decoud not only completely mitigated the deficit but also equalized the score at four games each.
At this point in the match, the game could’ve tilted either way but it was a lucky break for Odesnik as he held his serve and then benefitted from a breakpoint to take the opening set.
In a reversal of fortune, Decoud pulled up his sleeves and commenced the second set. the players locked into a fierce head-to-head series as each player bagged his respective serve, the score progressed in even terms. Matching a blow for a blow the score kept tied for the first eight games with four games each. However, Decoud took on his A-game and utilized the serve-break-serve method to clog the set.
Both players had bagged a set each by the end of the first two sets and opening the third round was Odesnik and he held his service game to open the scoreboard at 1-0. Mean while, Decoud’s forehand went wayward and he gave a crucial break to his adversary.
On the other hand, Odesnik capitalized from an early break and then held his serve to take a mini lead of three games to love on the scoreboard. It was in the fourth game that Decoud made a return with a hold of serve. Subsequently, in the following two games the players bagged a service game each and the score had shifted to 4-2 at the end of the sixth game.
During the last two games Odesnik held his serve and then benefitted from a game to steal away the set. In doing so; he sealed his victory of the match and reserved a place in the quarterfinal of the tournament.
