Wayne Odesnik hammers Carlos Oliveira in first round – BVA Open 2011 CH
Carlos Oliveira of Brazil went head-to-head with American, Wayne Odesnik, in the first round of the BVA Open Challenger tournament, contested in Brazil, on Monday October 24th. The first encounter between the two contestants
ended up with simplest of the victories for the American; he clinched the second round spot with a final score 6-0, 6-4 and in just over an hour and twenty-three minutes.
World No.921, Oliveira, was going through a very rough patch and had lost five of his last nine games; it was obvious that he was not going to make it to the second round with this run of form. World No.136, Odesnik, was enjoying
a relatively good run of form having won five of his last nine games; his superior ranking and better form sent a clear message to his opponent that it is going to be one of the toughest battles for the 35-year-old Brazilian veteran to win.
Johannesburg born, started the match in the dominating fashion and hammered his opponent all over the place. He didn’t allow his opponent to win a single game in the first set and that clearly depicts his class. Two aces and a
firing first and second serve success rate of 71% and 72% respectively pulled curtains for the veteran in the first set.
Brazilian was totally down and out through the first set and could only manage to win sixteen points on different but of no use as he couldn’t win a single game. The depressing first and second serve success rate of 29% and 30%
respectively along with no break throughout the set were the main factors that lead to his failure.
Second set was a bit more competitive but still Brazilian couldn’t manage to stretch the match into third set and lost the battle after winning four games. He was leading at one stage having broken his opponent serve once but Odesnik
came back and broke his serve twice to put a full stop to his recovery.
American maintained an impressive first and second serve success rate of 70% and 50% respectively in the second set as well and hampered the slow and gradual recovery of his opponent. He won 34 points in total compared to 28 of
his opponent and clinched the second round spot.
The overall fact sheet was really impressive for the American’s fans and equally dismal for the Brazilian’s fans. Crowd was disappointed at a complete one-sided encounter and were expecting a much better fight from the local player.
The triumph in this match has drawn Wayne Odesnik with the top seeded Portugese star, Rui Machado, in the second round of the tournament.
