Wayne Odesnik hammers Julio Silva in the second round - Sao Leopoldo Challenger 2011
American eighth seed, Wayne Odesnik outclassed his fellow second round competitor, Julio Silva, in the Sao Leopoldo Challenger tournament. The match was contested in outdoor clay courts in Sao Leopoldo, Brazil on Thursday November
3rd; lasted for just over an hour and twenty nine minutes with straight sets 6-4, 6-2 victory for American.
Local player couldn’t make the same impact as his first round match and left the crowd dejected. His topsy turvy results in recent past might have been one of the reasons for that loss but apparently it looked like he was completely
overwhelmed by the class of his opponent and surrendered at very early stages of the game.
Odesnik was in supreme form and had just lost three of his last nine encounters and looked to make a strong impact by marching into the quarter-final with a thumping victory. Silva started the proceeding in conventional manner
and held his serve; his opponent did the same and score moved to 1-1.
Visitor broke his rival’s serve in the very next game and clinched two game lead by holding on to his serve; score moved to 3-1. Brazilian had an opportunity to break his opponent’s serve in the fourth game but he couldn’t capitalize
on his opportunity and lost the very crucial point.
Silva knew little about the game play of his opponent as both players were seeing each other for the first time. His mega experience at all levels of the game proved worthless as his competitor came up with such impressive display
which he couldn’t counter at all.
Both players met blow to blow of each other and pushed the score further. Brazilian earned another opportunity to pull the score back on level terms but he couldn’t break once again due to couple of perfectly placed forehands from
his opponent.
Local veteran couldn’t find any more opportunities to break and hence the set was over with a score of 6-4. Trailing one set down, Silva needed some support from his audience to lift his morale but they were completely silent because
Odesnik had left no reason for them to be excited about.
Visitor started from where he left and broke once again in the very first game of the second set to take lead and coupled it with two aces in the second game to make it 2-0. Pin drop silence was experienced at the arena while Silva
lost another game on his serve and score was 4-0 in no time.
Finally a consolation game win for the Brazilian came in the fifth game but it was not good enough to dismantle the outrageous form his opponent. Odesnik cruised into the last eight with this thumping triumph and faces the top
seed, Rui Machado, in the quarter-finals.
