Wayne Odesnik surprises Joao Sousa in the round one – Porto Alegre Challenger 2012 CH
Left-hander, Wayne Odesnik, takes over the higher ranked Portuguese contender, Joao Sousa, in the first round of the Porto Alegre Challenger 2012 held at the clay courts of Brazil. He nudged up to secure his straight sets triumph
6-4, 6-3 in nearly two hours on Wednesday.
Ranked 139th in the ATP World Tour Rankings, Odesnik, held his serve throughout the first set. He secured the initial score to mark a 1-0 score but immediately his rival evened out the score line to 1-1. The two challengers
gave each other a tough competition and the gallantly fought against one another to square down the score line one after the other. In the end, the American participant cashed his challenger’s last serve and concluded the opener with a 6-4 lead.
In the second set, the 23-year-old Portuguese displayed his superior game plan and broke the American serve in the third game. Despite of his former loss, he jumped forward to sustain his lead and marked a 3-1 lead by the fourth
game. The American senior levelled down the score line to 3-all in the sixth game and started to take the lead. He sustained his momentum until the end and terminated the match with a 6-3 win.
The 92nd ranked Portuguese participant had 72 percent initial serve with 15 of 23 first and five of nine second serve points. The American professional attained 45 percent first serve accuracy with 14 of 22 first serve points with
16 of 27 serve points. He managed to bag away the win by securing one of the two break points but his competitor was unable to clinch even one.
The 26-year-old, Odesnik, had 58 percent initial serve and he pocketed away 11 of 15 first and seven of 11 second delivery points. He secured two of three serve breaks and his rival grabbed the one bestowed onto him. The right-hander,
Sousa attained a relatively better initial serve of 74 percent, winning 11 of 20 first but just two of seven second serve points.
For the next match, Odesnik will contest against the German player, Julian Reister.
