Wayne Rooney Finally Apologizes To Manchester United Fans
It seems that Wayne Rooney’s chapter of betrayal to the Manchester United faithful is over as the striker formally apologized to his fans. Rooney’s attitude and his disregard for his fans’ feelings had angered Manchester United
fans, but the English striker did not take the matter seriously. However, Rooney has now realized the gravity of the situation and he has issued his official statement.
The problem started when Rooney’s private affairs were being discussed in the media circles. Naturally, fans and even the officials at Manchester United, including the manager Sir Alex Ferguson, realized that the player had let
his club down. Once a player is a part of a club, his actions and reactions are all part of that system. Therefore, it is imperative that a player should keep these things in mind and avoid a step that could malign his name, along with the name of his club.
Wayne Rooney never understood such a rudimentary principle of being a vital part of a system. His fans were let down and Rooney did not do anything to mend that relationship; rather he did everything to make things worse. The striker
announced that he would be leaving the club because of some undisclosed reasons. Later on, when the fog was cleared and the picture became clear, it was revealed that Rooney exploited United’s situation to get a better deal out of the club. In the end, the
striker stayed and got a deal worth £250,000 per week, an unprecedented thing in the long history of the club.
At this point, the anger of United’s fans boiled to an extreme, but Rooney remained aloof of the whole situation. The striker was injured and he did not play any game after his new contract, and the fans were unable to show their
displeasure. The striker was sent to the United States for rehabilitation for one week. Upon his return, Rooney came as a substitute in the match against Wigan Athletic, but the fans did not seem very pleased with the return of their star striker after being
on the sidelines for months. This was the first time Wayne Rooney realized that the fans have not forgiven him and he has to make his statement official, which was also initially suggested by the manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.
Therefore, after scoring the winning penalty against Rangers in the midweek Champions League clash, Rooney found the right time to make his apology. In an official statement, Rooney told the press that he had already apologised
to the fans but the general perception was different. Therefore, Rooney apologised once again and regretted all his actions that had let Manchester United down. Rooney said that he had made his plans (and his loyalty) obvious by signing a new long-term contract
with the club. The striker also told the press that he changed his decision after engaging in meetings with the manager, Ferguson, and the chief executive, David Gill, who assured him that the club is going in the right direction.
Perhaps Wayne Rooney did not take his fans’ displeasure seriously, and thought that his actions would send a message to his fans. On the contrary, the supporters are always passionate about their game – some to an overzealous extent
– and there have been many incidents in the past which show the level of enthusiasm. When Steven Gerrard wanted to leave Liverpool he received death threats from fans, which made him change his decision. Also, some crazy fan shot dead the Columbian defender,
Andres Escobar, who scored an own goal against United States, resulting in the elimination of his team from the World Cup. Likewise, Manchester United fans also arranged a protest outside Rooney’s house, which was later termed as some kind of terrorism.
Rooney’s apology might be enough for the time being, but he will have to start from scratch and win the hearts of his fans all over again. The striker has to prove that he is worth the money being paid to him and reform himself
into a real match-winner for Manchester United.
