Wayne Rooney could make comeback against Wigan Athletic
Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has revealed that striker Wayne Rooney could make his return from injury when the English Premier League champions take on Wigan Athletic on Saturday 20 November.
The England international has been out of action for several weeks after picking up an ankle injury in a tackle by Paul Scholes while training for a UEFA Chmapions Elague game against Turkish league champions Bursaspor.
Rooney returned to United's Carrington training base on Monday 15 November after a week of conditioning work in Portland, Oregon.
Though his injury had completely healed before flying to complete his intense training programme, he was sent to build up his fitness after missing out on United's pre-season programme as a result of featuring for his country at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
As a result, Phelan has claimed that the 25-year-old attacker may be unleashed agaist Wigan at Old Trafford.
He told the BBC that: “Will he play? We will have a look and then build towards the weekend. Wayne has trained very well and we will assess him during the week. The exercise that we have put in place for him has worked well.”
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson also said that Rooney had been training hard while in Portland. He told the Manchester Evening News publication that: "Wayne's had a good week, he's trained very hard, two days two sessions, three days three sessions, we've achieved
what we wanted to achieve."
Rooney has not played for United since making a substitute appearance in the 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion on 16 October. The player has been beset by injuries this season and his last start for the Red Devils came in the 2-2 draw with Bolton on 26
September.
He has played just 13 of United's 20 games across all competitions this term.
