Wayne Rooney decides to stay at Manchester United
It has been a day of delight and utter joy for Manchester United fans, as their Marquee player Wayne Rooney has decided to stay at the club and put pen to paper on a 5-year contract extension. It was a big U-turn by the striker who had made it clear that
he wanted to leave the club, the reason behind his decision according to him was that he was not given assurances that club would be bringing in big names in the future.
Manchester United boss sir Alex Ferguson was understandably delighted, and said that he is very happy that Wayne has decided to stay with the club. Wayne Rooney in a statement said that it was the persistence and support of Sir Alex that actually convinced
him to stay; he called his boss a genius.
Wayne Rooney though would still be sidelined due an ankle injury for at least 3 more weeks. After signing the contract Rooney released a statement that read:
"I'm delighted to sign another deal at United. I've spoken to the manager and the owners and they've convinced me this is where I belong”.
"I am signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history - which is the reason I joined the club in the first place”.
Wayne who has been a crowd favourite for the last 5 seasons admitted that his actions in last few days may have shocked his supporters. But he clarified that his concerns were only for the future of the club. Rooney said that ever since he arrived at the
club he has got enormous love and support from United faithful, and now it is his duty to win them back by performing on the pitch.
The agreement of Rooney finally ends tense few days for Manchester United and Wayne Rooney. The whole issue started on Tuesday when after several rumours Wayne Rooney issued a statement, that club Chief Executive David Gill had not been able to give him
assurance over the club’s future. He had said that he wanted to win trophies and if the club cannot ensure that then he would want to leave.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was faced with a barrage of questions the same day as he sat down in front of the press, ahead of Manchester United’s Champion’s League match against Bursaspor. Ferguson looked dejected and shocked, he admitted
that Rooney has made the request to leave, and said that he was in a state of utter shock and disbelief. However he did say that the door is still open for Wayne, and he is welcome to stay.
The very next day there were some crisis talk meetings held at Old Trafford, between Sir Alex, the board and Manchester United’s Chief Executive David Gill. By Thursday night there were no major developments, or at least none that were revealed.
Finally on Friday afternoon Manchester United revealed that Ferguson held talks with Wayne Rooney and the striker has decided to stay. The news sparked joy across United fans in every corner of the world, while Ferguson and the board also said that they
were delighted by the decision.
This may be the first time Sir Alex Ferguson has persuaded a player who had his mind made up to leave. As in the past it has been the boss who has had his way in such situations, the exit of David Beckham and Jaap Stam in the past were great examples of
that. All of this actually shows how important Wayne Rooney is to the club, and now as himself said. Wayne would have to once again win over his fans and prove to them that this is where he really belongs.
