Wayne Rooney signs new contract with Manchester United
Wayne Rooney has made a sensational turnaround and has signed a new five-year contract with Manchester United.
The English Premier League giants’ manager Sir Alex Ferguson had revealed on Tuesday, 19 October that the player had no intention of extending his previous deal, which was set to run out in 2012.
The 24-year-old confirmed this fact in a statement released on Wednesday, with the striker saying his reasoning behind his decision to leave the club was that he felt the Red Devils would not be able to match his ambition, while he cited concern over the
strength of the club’s squad. That led to speculation that he was set to leave when the transfer window opens for business in January.
After two days of intensive talks, the England international has changed his mind and penned a contract that will see him remain at Old Trafford until 2015.
Rooney, who is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, told the club’s official website that it was the mutual respect he has with Ferguson that had helped convince him to stay.
He said that: "I said on Wednesday the manager's a genius and it's his belief and support that convinced me to stay. I'm delighted to sign another deal at United. I've spoken to the manager and the owners and they've convinced me this is where I belong.
"I am signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history — which is the reason I joined the club in the first place.
"I am sure the fans over the last week have felt let down by what they have read and seen. But my position was from concern over the future. The fans have been brilliant with me since I arrived and it's up to me through my performances to win them over again."
Ferguson added that: "I'm delighted Wayne's agreed to stay. I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is. I'm pleased he has accepted the challenge to guide the younger players and establish himself as one of United's great players.”
