Wayne Rooney keen on long spell at Manchester United
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says he is eager to stay with the English Premier League giants for a long time to come, but has yet to apologise for the controversy surrounding his contract negotiations.
The 24-year-old claimed in October that he wanted to move on from United, only to sign a new five-year deal just two days later that may have taken his wages as high as £250,000 per week.
Though it was rumoured that he only extended his contract so that United would be able to receive a higher transfer fee for him in a future transfer window, England international Rooney claimed that he was committed to the Red Devils.
He told the club's official website: "I've heard from different people that I've agreed a new deal so that the club can agree a higher price for me to join a different team somewhere along the line. But that's a load of rubbish. I've signed a new deal to
stay here. My long-term future is at Manchester United. I've always made it aware that I wanted to stay at this club. I had my concerns and voiced my opinion but it went from there.”
Meanwhile, Rooney made his return from an ankle injury in the 2-0 EPL win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday 20 November when he came on as a substitute and admitted it was good to be back.
He added: "It was a great feeling (to pull on the shirt again), obviously having been out for a long time and the issues that have gone on over the last few weeks. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about the reaction from the fans but overall I thought
the reception was brilliant and all I want to do is get on the pitch and score goals.”
Rooney will make his first start since September in the UEFA Champions League match against Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday 24 November.
