Wayne Rooney may be fit for England match
England striker Wayne Rooney may make a return from injury in time to face Montenegro in a UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying match.
The Manchester United forward has been out of action since picking up an ankle knock in the second half of the 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers last weekend.
He had initially been ruled out for three weeks and while he will definitely miss Saturday’s game against Sunderland, Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he could make a comeback for the Euro 2012 clash on October 12.
'He will be fine in a week'
Ferguson told reporters on Friday that: "Wayne trained on Thursday and he wants to play on Saturday. But I have to take the view that this injury has been niggling away for a while and he kept on playing. I have to be dead sure that I am doing the right
thing because Wayne has not been doing himself justice. I think in a week he will be fine. Obviously we don't play in a week, so it is up to [England boss] Fabio Capello whether he wants him to."
Rooney has suffered a dismal start to the English Premier League season partly as a result of allegations over his private life.
However, he managed to find the back of the net in his last game for England, a 3-1 qualifying win over Switzerland last month — just two days after the reports that he had solicited the services of a prostitute had surfaced.
Meanwhile, Ferguson will also have to make do without the services of midfielders Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs for Saturday’s match, while he will pay close attention to the condition of recently returned trio Rio Ferdinand, Anderson Luís de Abreu Oliveira
and Michael Carrick ahead of the game.
