Wayne Rooney signs a new 5-year deal
There was a lot of drama in the last week, regarding the Wayne Rooney situation. There were series of blames being put on each other, but the problem seems to have resolved. Wayne Rooney, whose contract was set to expire in 2012, has signed a new deal extending
his services up till 2015.
The real problem behind the whole episode was Rooney’s decision not to sign a contract in August of this year. After this incident, Ferguson showed his displeasure by keeping his striker on the bench, for some important matches. But, this state of events
could not go on for longer periods, as Ferguson was going out of the excuses he needed to keep the player out, as a sign of punishment.
At one point, Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager of Manchester United, told the press that Rooney is being kept out because of an ankle injury. However, things got worse when Rooney repudiated Ferguson’s comments by saying that he did not suffer from any kind
of ankle problem throughout the season. The speculations continued to build and at one point there were rumours about Rooney leaving the club.
In the beginning, these were just speculations, but as the media pressed Manchester United to bring out the real story, Ferguson told the press that his striker really wants to leave the club. These rumours were also confirmed by other club officials, while
other clubs started to show their interest in the striker. This whole drama seemed to be over when Wayne Rooney himself told the media about his desire to leave the club. At this point, he blamed Manchester United for being unprofessional in dealing with their
players.
However, there was yet another climax to this whole drama. Out of nowhere, Wayne Rooney decided to sign a new contract. This contract makes him the highest paid player in club’s history, with his wages up to £180,000 per week. In his interview with the press,
Rooney claimed that his manager had a big part to play in his decision.
This development is exactly what Ferguson had desired. In the growing problems with his team, Ferguson did not need his best player, despite of being out of form for quite some time, to leave the club. Therefore, Ferguson seemed happy when he broke the news
to the media. Apart from him, other officials at Manchester United were also happy with the news. This included the owners, the Glazer family, and United’s chief executive, David Gill. During this course, it was also revealed that Rooney has made apologies
to his manager and fellow players, while he would do the same for his fans in coming days.
Although, the story seemed to have legs at one point, however, there were many who believed that Rooney would stay at Manchester United. Jose Mourinho, who was once interested in signing the striker, told the press that it was better for Rooney to stay at
his club, and he would do exactly the same. Similarly, Carlo Ancelotti, the boss of Chelsea, also said that Ferguson would not let his striker go that easy. Arsene Wenger, the manager of Arsenal, had the similar views about this whole drama.
If we now reflect back on the events of past few weeks, it would be clear that there was nothing unusual about this whole story. Often, when players are being offered new contracts, they show reluctance at the beginning. The great thing about Ferguson and
Rooney is that they have used this as a publicity stunt. Now, no one would remember the allegations made by press on Rooney’s personal life. This event has overshadowed all the past events of Rooney’s life.
Nevertheless, it is great news for United’s fans, who were getting worried about the happenings at Old Trafford. Now, as the matter is settled, Ferguson would focus all his energy back on winning a few matches and making United a formidable side, once again.
