Wayne Rooney’s Decision a Relief for All at Manchester United
A week full of speculation and uncertainty is over for the diehard Manchester United fans, as their major striking force Wayne Rooney has declared that he is set to stay at the club for five more years after announcing his intentions
of leaving the English football giants earlier in the week.
The star striker’s stunning U-turn capped off a remarkable week as he agreed to sign a five-year contract to stay at Manchester United.
The England striker, who is hailed as the best striker in the country, was set to leave Old Trafford in the next transfer window (January) after saying two days ago that he wanted to quit because of United's inability of attracting
top-class players and improving performances outside England.
He claimed that the driving force behind his decision to stay at the club was due to the time spent with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Rooney was full of praise for the man at the helm of his club and called him a "genius". He added that Ferguson told him what his true value was and where he belonged.
Ferguson, on the other hand, was a relieved man as a worrisome week ended on a positive note for him.
He said that Rooney had apologized to him and realized "what a great club Manchester United is".
While Rooney might have taken a wise decision, for some critics and fans of the club, he has to justify why he decided to abandon his club in the first place.
He also has to strengthen his ties with Ferguson after publicly denouncing him earlier this month by saying he was not injured when his manager said he was.
"It's been difficult for me and I'm sure for the club. For me I felt I had to get my point across and we finally came to an agreement which is best for the two of us, for me and the club," Rooney told MUTV.
"I've spoken with the manager, David Gill, with the Glazers, and all of them have confirmed to me that this is the right club for me to be at and the club is going to continue to be successful and winning things."
Despite pledging his commitment to the club, the striker has to prove a lot to his fans and passionate supporters of the club that has arguably the greatest following for a football team in the world.
Meanwhile, the financial details of the new deal have not been revealed yet and it remains to be seen how long the deal lasts, as despite his claims, Rooney might not have his heart set in playing at Old Trafford for long.
Rooney was one of the stars last season when he netted as many as 34 goals, but since then, he has struggled to find his form this season with just one club goal which too was a spot kick conversion.
When the news of his discontent at the club broke earlier in the week, reports emanated that he was set to move across the city to neighbours Manchester City.
Police claimed that they had to ward off a small crowd of 20-30 people who had gathered outside the striker’s home to question his decision.
The irked fans also vandalized a Nike shop in Manchester with what was perceived as a very public death threat aimed the star who has been one of the brightest players for his club in recent years.
The graffiti followed Thursday's protest by the crowd gathered at Rooney’s residence, which once again highlights the fact that the sport and the club Manchester United is a passion as big as life for some.
