want to go out there and see the world, visit all the different cities etc and ways of living blah blah u know what i'm on about lol. I'm only 16 so i've got plenty of time to do it, but i'm thinknig ahead now and wondering ways u could do it?

I'm into motorcycles and biking a lot...so something like the Long Way Down TV series (google!) would be awesome, but obviously it won't be that easy.

So what other ways are there to explore the world or even just this country with my interests on how to do it in mind too.

(I've been thinking of getting a motorcycle road bike when I can and in a few years time go visit a lot of the big cities in the UK?)

  1. I think that your desire to explore the world is great and very admirable.  For that reason, I would recommend you really think about your plans before you do it; I wouldn't want you to have a bad experience that stops you from seeing the rest.

Going by motorcycle has a lot of advantages: you are on your own schedule and can decide where you go and change plans quickly.  However, if you choose to do that (or the boat option someone else mentioned), I would really encourage you to get mechanic's training.  You never know where your bike will break down and whether a mechanic who knows what he's doing or the parts needed to fix the motorcycle will be available. That being said, I have sailed through most of the Caribbean and it was a lot of fun. We had complete control and got to pick and choose the islands we wanted to see and those we wanted to skip.

My advice is to try backpacking around Europe and see how you like it.  I visited six cities around Western Europe traveling by train. We bought tickets the day we wanted to leave and we found hotels and hostels when we got to town (or we stayed with friends).  It was a lot of fun and really recommend it.

The most important thing to remember is that things are not always so easy as they are in developed countries.  I have friends who have been jailed in West Africa just for being on the same street as the president.  Some countries in Africa are great to visit. I can personally vouch for the two I've been to: Ghana (Accra is very safe) and South Africa (Cape Town is very beautiful).  However, many others, specifically Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Cote D'Ivoire, just to name a few are not safe at all. I would be careful making plans to travel through many African countries because you would certainly eventually come upon a place you don't want to be.

    Hope it helps! Happy trails!

  2. ever think of looking into a used sailboat? a seaworthy boat can be had for quite an affordable price and are fairly easy to maintain and sail. this will open the door for a whole world of exploration(global and personal). if you are into camping or can make do without the comforts of home, then i'd look into a catalina 27' or other comparable 25'-27'. the "wellfound yachts" websight might be of some help. good luck and have fun.   peace, john

  3. Nah I think that visiting all the major cities in England is a bit boring and not very adventurous. My brother left on a trip last week around Europe and parts of Asia. Hes 18 and hes trying to fit it all in before he starts Uni. (hes not having a gap year).

Me and my friend have been talking about travelling when were 18 (were 14 now) and want to do something similar. My brother and his friends seem to be having loads of fun and it isn't costing them a lot either. They've been flying, catching buses and trains and sleeping in cheap hotels and travel hostels. I REALLLY want to travel too and after watching the Long Way Down, The Long Way Round and Jack Osbourne Adrenaline Junkie have made me even more interested in it!

You could do something like in the Long Way Down but it seems quite dangerous and expensive and would take loads of planning.

I can't really give you any tips because I haven't travelled on my own yet but hopefully you should get some good answers. Cya mate.
