  1. Want to self teach yourself?

OK, walk up to a bunch of girls and kick one in the groin and call the others (derogatory name that starts with a "C")!

Once you learn to survive that.

Walk up to a bunch of frat boys, kick one in the groin and call the others (derogatory name that starts with a "P")!

Once you learn to survive that.

Walk up to a bunch of black guys, kick one in the groin and call the others (derogatory name that starts with a "N")!

Once you learn to survive that.

Walk up to a bunch of h***s Angel's, kick one in the groin and call the others (derogatory name that starts with... well anything)

Once you learn to survive that.

Walk up to a bunch of cops and say that you're black.

Once you learned to survive that, congratulations, you've earned you black belt from the school of the hard knocks.

  2. To tell you the truth, you could try but it wouldn't be all that accurate.  Martial arts arent something you can learn from on a book.

  3. No. You cannot learn anything beyond maybe the superficial movements of the movements, learning the applications without  a teacher would be futile. To RDF (above me)-the first martial arts were tested in battle, not by a teenager watching youtube clips and reading books. If they did not work, the practitioners were killed, ensuring that only effective martial arts survived. The asker is under no such pressure. Besides, if it was so effective to teach yourself, why did the successful martial artists take on students? Why not just tell them to teach themselves.

To the asker: Please, please seek out an instructor to teach you martial arts, by all means practice as much as you can at home, but you wouldn't learn medicine without going to med school, or teach yourself to be an airline pilot, likewise you cannot really teach yourself martial arts.

  4. No there is not. Learn to use the search feature:

  5. best bet is to do research into the forms and get as many books as you can.

Google the topics of "Martial Art Forms" or " Katas"

  6. well you can learn off a website but the technique will be no where near as good as if you were taught by an instructor

some websites you can try are:

    Hope i helped

  7. Um, it is always possible to learn the forms alone. Yea, the arts. But, the thing risky about self teaching is that no one will be correct you if something goes wrong. You'll never know if what you learn is correct, since you're learning from a screen. I wouldn't suggest self teaching, but you can try. A lot of martial artists self teach too once they hit a high enough rank; however, that is because they already know the basic concepts of martial arts, so it's easier for them to pick up, and smaller chance of making a mistake. My suggestion is, go out and receive instructions, don't learn it yourself.

  8. Yes you can teach yourself. It's only as possible as you make it. After all, martial arts wasn't invented out of thin air you know. It had to come from one person before it could be passed on to others.

It takes alot of TIME, patience, and pure dedication in order to teach yourself though. More so than learning from someone else. Back in the early days, people had the time that they needed if they ever decided to train on there own (I'm pretty sure that SOME did, whether they were successful or not), but today's society is too fast-paced and materialistic, so that is something that you have to take in consideration.

All in all, it's best to learn from someone if you can because that is the only way your mistakes can be truly corrected in a proper way. If you want to learn from a website or a book anyway (Which is NOT recommended), your best bet is to at least have a training partner who is willing to train along with you (Of course with protective gear). That way you can at least test out your skills.

EDIT - to Peter J below me, your comment wasnt rude, but wasnt necessary either.
