I do Charity work at my school, and my principle has asked me to come up with an idea on how to get students to do charity WITHOUT bringing money. Any Creative Ideas or Tips? Or Charities that you know

  1. You could have the students spend some time cleaning up the community, building (or repairing) neighborhood playgrounds, having a rummage sale and donating the earnings, have the students visit elderly at nursing home, volunteer at a soup kitchen or an animal shelter, bring in old clothing toys or non-perishable food to donate.

    If they could make part of it a part of their class assignment then that would be a good motivation.

  2. As part of the curriculum AND in order to graduate, each student should have X hours of community service.

    I JUST learned about the program in the Philadelphia public schools.

    The library at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, Philadelphia, PA, where I do my volunteer work, has two public high school students who volunteer their time about 4 hours, one or two days each week.

    Yes, that is my real last name!

  3. Promote volunteering to the student body, encouraging them to volunteer for nonprofits they care about. Educate them about the serious, REAL commitment that volunteering is and what they can expect through their service. And encourage students to blog about their experiences as volunteers.

    Promote these sites to students to help them volunteer:

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

    Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site,

    http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/

    There's also this government sponsored site, http://volunteer.gov/gov/ which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.

    If students want to be a volunteer to help with the consequences of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, they need to register and prepare NOW. Here's a web site where they can register and start their preparation so that they can help the next time disaster strikes:

    http://www.helpindisaster.org/

    NetAid has programs specifically for high school students in North America who want to help in the developing world. NetAid is now a part of MeryCorps

    TakingIT Global is another resource for young people in the USA who want to do something to affect the situation positively in developing countries

  4. help out within the community such as cleaning up homeless shelters, feeding the homeless

    be creative about it, anything you can do service for homeless

    imagine you were homeless, what would you want, go to a homeless shelter and help out

    Food drive is a good with the class that brings the most gets a party, to go to a movie etc

    Or the person who brings the most gets to drop the lowest grade.

    A Loose Change Day

  6. Visit a Nursing home.

  7. canned food drive for your local food bank;

    donate time, food, toys, newspaper, litter at an animal shelter;

    visit the elderly at a nursing home;

    a walk/run/sit in to raise money for charity;

    recycling bins at school;

    the easiest one of all: free hugs/kind words day--where you simply say one nice thing about everyone you see that day...or give a hug to them....promotes friendship, good vibes, and positiveness for everyone involved.

  8. There are any number of organizations that would love to have free labor. contact you local senior citizen center, park official or any human service organization. Offer to paint, clean etc. This will be a few hours work for healthy young people and will benefit others enormously. It will also help the students because it can make a great story on a college admissions essay or in a job interview.

  9. distribute food, clothing etc. clean up dirty areas. go into poor or disadvantaged areas and make oppurtunities for the people there.

  10. Do a food drive.  Have the students bring in canned or nonperishable foods.  Take the food to your local soup kitchen or shelter that feeds the homeless.

    The schools in our area participate in Harvest for the Hungry, which is a state based charity (I think), but I'm sure there are similar groups in your area.  These drives usually center around the holidays.

    Adopt a grandparent would also be a good idea.  Have the kids become surrogate grandkids to the elderly in nursing centers.  Many times these people have no one.

  11. Donate your hair to Locks of Love.  donat your time @ a childrens hospital or Habitat for Humanity helps people, construction style, or on any old day go into an old folks home and give a little ol lady flowers.
