What are ways to kill laziness?

I am SO LAZIDAISICAL. College is in 2 weeks and I'm afraid I'll give up because I'll be bombarded with studying and work. I have this tendency to give up when the going get's tough.

  1. I had the same problem when I first started college. Here's what I did to overcome it:

    (1) buy a planner and USE it. I would sit down at the beginning of the semester and transfer everything from each syllabus on to the correct.  While everyone was shoving their stuff in bags/rushing out the door I would make sure that I would right down any assignments or changes the professor had noted.

    (2) Break assignments up over a few days. Have to read all of Romeo & Juliet by next week? Look at your schedule and figure out how many pages you have to read each day to have it completed in time.

This also works well for larger "semester long" type projects. If you can accomplish small parts of the larger task it makes it seem more obtainable.

    (3) Make daily/weekly/monthly to do lists. Nothing is a satisfying as drawing a line through a task that you have completed!

And finally don't be afraid to ask for help.  If you are on campus ask your roommate/floor-mates if you can study-buddy hours where everyone commits to spending an hour studying (and then doing something fun like getting ice cream).  Also, if you are really having a problem focusing talk to your professors or the school counselors.

    Good Luck!

  2. I'm in the same position. I used to sit on my butt all day for about 2 years. I finally forced myself to apply and got into a really good private college. Now I'm here with loads of homework, laundry, shopping, clubs, and all of that stuff. All I can tell you is that it gets harder with time, so jump in now. Just do it; don't think too much beforehand.

I have that same tendency to give up when the going gets tough, but I've known people who had to do hard physical labor and stayed in the poverty range. Work now or work harder later; you're going to have to face it one day. Get an education that no one can take from you. Get through it, have some good experiences, and snatch that degree.

As someone who used to wake up around 2pm, go to sleep around 3am or later, and watch tv while surfing the 'net for literally 2 years (no job), I can tell you that if I'm capable of this, so are you. A lot of our types give up because we want perfection. We're "all or nothing" types of people and when it gets difficult, we run. Just put aside that ego and settle for mediocrity until you get it under control.

    Best wishes!
