I'm trying to make a nice dinner for my husband who's leaving for Iraq Wednesday morning. So I picked up a piece of ham, looks like it might be already sliced, but I have no idea how to cook it, not very good at cooking. Any suggestions? limited on what to add to it, and no fruit. Completely lost please help!

  1. If it is already sliced then it is cooked.  Just reheat and serve.  Maybe with a nice honey mustard sauce.  Check footv.com for honey mustard sauce and find one you think you will like.  A simple honey mustard sauce is just half and half mustard and honey.

  2. Normally those presliced hams have a sauce packet.  If not, read the package and make sure it is a precooked ham.  Use a baking dish with sides, cover with foil and cook at about 350 until nice and hot.  Put sauce, or make your own (brown sugar, mustard, honey, any combination) and brush over the ham.  Leave foil off for glaze/sauce to brown a bit.

    All done, nice and easy.

Please tell your husband I thank him.

  3. Are you sure there are no directions that came with the ham, such as on back of the label?   If the ham is already sliced, it probably is also precooked.  But you still want to cook it some more!  Put it in a roasting pan, cover the bottom of the pan with approx 1/2 inch of water. Put lid on pan, or cover ham with aluminum foil.  Bake several hours at about 400 degrees F.     Sweet potatoes would go great with ham.  You could just put them in the oven on the rack and they would bake while the ham is baking.  Yum!  The sweet potatoes would be done in about one hour, so put them in the oven later than the ham.

  4. Ham is already cooked, and if it is sliced it is ready for the mouth.

Ham and mustard sandwiches is an option and you wouldn't have to cook.

You could chop it up and toss through a lettuce salad or do a stir fry.

You still have time to duck out to the shops to get one of his favourite meats for a feed, something he isn't likely to get in Iraq.

    Boiled Pickled Pork

This is still a very popular dish in Yorkshire and other northern counties of England. It is often served with Pease Pudding which is sold separately in butcher's shops and sometimes served with bacon for breakfast.

    Ingredients

    Serves: 8-10

1.4-1.6 Kilogram (3-3 1/2 lb) pickled pork, shoulder or hand (soak in water for four hours to remove excess salt)

    1.7 Litres Water (3 pints)

    2 Whole Cloves

    4 Large Onions, halved

    6 Large Carrots, halved

    4 sticks Celery, chopped

    4 White turnips, halved

    6 Black peppercorns

    1 Sprig Fresh parsley

    1 Sprig Fresh thyme

    Method

Place the pork and the water in a very large saucepan and bring to the boil.

Stick the cloves into one of the onion halves, then add to the pan with all the remaining ingredients.

Simmer the meat and vegetables for about 1 1/2 hours.

Place the pork and vegetables on a warm serving dish and serve with pease pudding and English mustard.

You don't need to go to all of that trouble, but add the bits you have. It is nicer than corned beef.

I hope he comes home to you when his tour ends.
