What would be good ways to improve my lot with Canada's point system? I have no relatives in Canada or employment arranged and I am from the UK.

  1. Learn French, and have some needed/targeted skills are the best bets.  Check with Canada House in London, they can give you the criteria so you can see what if anything you can do to improve your score.

  2. you need to be a skilled worker

  3. Improve your language skills to score higher on that section, add to your education and job experience, you can also score more points if you arrange a job offer.

You know that you do not have to go to Canada on the points system.  If you can get a temporary work permit as a skilled worker, you can go through a provincial nominee program which is way faster.  Check out http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/p... for what kind of jobs you can apply for to qualify.

Applying under the points system from the UK takes something like 3 years for you to get your PR.  If you get a job offer that qualifies as an occupation under pressure, you can have a work permit in 2 months, move to Canada right away and have a PR in less than a year.

If you are not in a hurry, it will not matter but by going in under the points system, just remember that you qualify to immigrate but that does not guarantee that you will get a good job when you arrive.
