I've been on a plane a few times, but the last time I was on a plane home from Portugal I had a panick attack as the plane doors were closed. I had been fine before on the plane. I started having a panick attack, stood up, asked the air stuardess to open the doors then started choking on a sweet. Then they eventually calmed me down, I haven't been on an aeroplane since and that was over 6 years ago now. For over a year after I kept having daily panick attacks at school and missed out on lessons, this really disrupted my education. I have recently had a son and would like for us to take him away on holiday and don't want to pass my fear of flying onto him. Please help

  1. Just know that more cars crash then planes, and you drive a car i suppose!  It is more likely you crash in the car, then the in the plane.   Their is one accident per year on planes, and they never result in death's or anything serious.  Take your ipod, and watch movies, When i go on the plane i listen to songs and watch movies, and think of good memories i have had with people.  Also sit inbetween your son and your wife, or whoever, to know that you are surrounded by people!  Just little things make a big difference, dont be scared, and drink a lot of Coke, i know this sounds stupid, but coke has high caffeine and sugar and on the plane, it takes your mind of the trip.

  2. Google "fear of flying"there is help out there.

  3. just think how much you are missing out on! Theres a whole world out there!

  4. Go to the doc, they should give you valium. That should work.

  5. How to get over the fear of flying eh?? Well, that is to fly on an airplane itself. It's really not that scary. I ensure you. If your worrying about an accident will occur to you I'll tell you this:

I read in Scientific American that it takes roughly around 14 roundtrips from the earth to the sun in order to experience an accident while flying.

What are the chances of that???

There are some classes which help people who are scared to fly airplanes to overcome their fear.

There are some websites and videos online that helps people to overcome this fear.

I don't remember when I first flew(which was like 3 months old). Even though you'll fear extremely nervous now and right before the flight. But believe me, you will enjoy it.

The only thing you fear, is fear itself.

Have fun, and enjoy!!! don't let it get to you!

  6. I had the same problem for years, and it can be devastating to your daily life, especially when the attacks start happening at school as you said.

See a doctor -- sometimes it can't be overcome by willpower or reason.  Get a mild tranquilizer prescribed, and take as needed.  You may find after a while just knowing you have meds with you help keep the panic at bay without actually taking them.

You will get more comfortable with these situations with some mild sedation, and will find after a while that you don't need them anymore.  Good luck.

  7. How about asking your G.P. for a referral to a hypnotherapist. They can be really quite good, and these sort of things do help. My son had a real fear of dentists, and a terrible phobia of anything to do with teeth! He couldn't even watch toothpaste commercials, but our dentist referred him to a local hypnotherapist, and after just four sessions, my son happily went and had two wisdom teeth out!

They can be found in your local phone book, but its better to be referred and therefore know that he/she is reputable.

  8. I know how you feel I hate flying as well. I have panic attacks as well and last July on a flight from Ireland to England I was dreading it, but it was grand after we lifted off, I read a magazine and talked to my sister next to me, I did grab the seat though and I thought the flight home would be as easy but I think the pilot was drunk because he landed on one wheel in Dublin and we shot off the runway and thanks to him I never want to go on an airplane again.

if you try not to think about it, I know that's easier said than done, try reading to take your mind off the fact you are in an airplane. don't look out the window, ask the airline for a seat next to the aisle. they say chewing chewing gum helps, it doesn't help me. use the oxygen mask if it gets really bad for you on the plane. or breathe into a brown paper bag it'll calm you down.
