Ways to improve strength and stamina for volleyball
Volleyball is a sport that requires its players to display a lot of energy and stamina. It requires flexibility and the ability to perform at the optimum for a long and continuous period of time. This is because the game of volleyball has no specific time
period rather; it has a scoring system which acts as a determinant of the match end.
The team that is able to bag three sets first wins the game of volleyball. The maximum number of sets that can be played by both the teams are five. Therefore, depending on the two teams competing, a game of volleyball can either end in three, four or five
sets. In the event that a volleyball game goes on to five sets, it often becomes a test of strength to determine which team will end up as the winner. The team that is able to play at a greater level of energy more often than not wins a five set long game
of volleyball.
The head coach of the women’s volleyball team at the University of Nebraska, John Cook, explains the importance of training in the following manner, “We have a responsibility as coaches to train athletes in a functional way. Our lifestyles promote poor posture,
and our training methods develop imbalances in our athletes. Our goal at Nebraska is to develop functional athletes who play without pain and do not compensate on the court. If we can succeed with our program, the Huskers will always have an edge on the court.”
Therefore, it is necessary for volleyball players to develop their strength and stamina so that they are able to last out till the fifth set in games that become tough and competitive. In order to develop the strength and skill of the volleyball players,
coaches should make their players practice drills that are aimed at improving the conditioning of the players.
One way to do this is to practice Consecutive Attacks. This drill requires the players to always make a hit on the ball despite the fact that they are tired. The coach can line up the players and toss the ball towards the first player in the line. The player
should approach the ball and make a hit and move to the back of the line and wait for his next turn. This drill should continue on for a period of five to ten minutes as it will allow the players to practice making hits despite the fact that they feel tired.
Not only that, the drill will also develop a good approaching technique in the players.
Another drill that is aimed at increasing the speed as well as the reaction time of the players is called Off the Floor drill. The coach needs to line up the players while the first player in the line should lie down on his stomach. When the drill starts,
the player should get up and try to make a hit on the ball as it is tossed by the coach. The coach can toss the ball at any angle. This drill should also be repeated at least five times so that the players can master the skill.
If teams practice the above mentioned drills regularly, their strength and stamina will increase significantly and they will be able to display a greater level of energy on the court during play.
