I have heard numerous times that a lip piercing can cause dental problems. If i put in a plastic stud would that help prevent that? Or is there any other ways to prevent having dental problems from a lip piercing? OTHER THAN NOT GETTING ONE OR TAKING IT OUT?????

  1. some people say that getting a non-metal stud can help. Plastic is bad, always. It is porous. You can't use it for healing, and even after your piercing is healed, you shouldn't wear plastic for extended periods of time. Bioflex is supposed to be good, though I've never tried it. I've had my tongue pierced for almost 10 years and my lip for about 4 1/2. I don't have any dental or oral damage. I wear stainless in both, and I have to wear a stud mon-fri in my lip. My piercer is very very experienced. He spent a long time on the placement of my lip piercing to make sure it would neither rub my gums nor catch my teeth. Point being, I think properly done piercings won't cause damage anyway. A shabby piercer who doesn't have enough experience to consider all the angles might give you a piercing that would cause damage, and as popular as piercings have become, there are plenty or piercers who don't have enough experience...So be careful who you choose, and if you're still worried, get bioflex or something similar for your jewelry.

  2. i have my monroe and snakebites, ive had them for three years now and ive never had one dental issue. it pretty much matters all about your jaw line, thats what my piercer told me.

if you havent gotten the piercing yet, you should be fine, if you are having dental problems, you should probably take it out.

  3. I wouldn't suggest getting a plastic stud, just because they're not as sturdy as metal ones and may have a tendency to break if you play with it a lot.

But there's actually little to no chance that you'll have dental problems with a lip piercing. Although if you're getting a lower lip piercing with an underbite, that may suck; and vise-versa.

But in most cases there's not any problems besides when your lip is swollen and you're getting used to talking with it.

If you get your lip pierced and you feel that you are having any type of dental problems, though; I'd suggest going to your dentist. If you don't have a dentist try going to the place where you got your lip pierced to see if you could get a smaller, or better fitting, jewelery piece.

  4. keep it from the inside of your mouth and use mouthwash
