Question:

Ways to reduce stress?

I'm going to my boyfriend's parents' house for the weekend, but instead of looking forward to it like I know I should be I can feel the creeping sensation of anxiety...

I get on very well with his parents - they're both wonderful. However, his sister, who will be there too, cannot stand me...for no real reason.

(A little background)

Can you suggest anything to help me calm down before I do go, or indeed whilst I'm there, because I'd hate to spend the whole time feeling as though I'm walking on eggshells and panicking incase I do something 'wrong'.

  1. Think to yourself....There is nothing I will do wrong; I am going to have fun and be with my boyfrined.  I am going to be myself.  I will not burden myself with their problems.  His sister will have to "DEAL WITH IT" & GET OVER IT.  His sister should be happy for her brother.

  2. Morning and even running.  Even a quick jog will help, and give them time to themselves.  No one likes to host non-stop all weekend.  Also, buy a gift for them if you can, like a bottle of wine, or favourite drink, always offer to help with clean up and dishes, or help prepare the meals.

  3. Re: "Can you suggest anything to help me calm down before I do go,"  Jeepers, YOU know the answers.  Cause in that other Q, you acknowledged the reassurance from others, "Thank you. All the answers are very reassuring."

First, Take a breath.  Nooooo, a BIG breath.  Now exhale slowly.  Do it again, same motion.  And do it again, if you have to.  You see, our bodies NEED oxygen!  And when we feel fear & get that "walking on eggshells and panicking" notion, we can tend to forget to BREEEEEEATHE!

Performers do exercises this way before they go on stage, I would site other ppl who do also, but I believe that you get the picture.

Lastly, tell yourself positive messages.  positive messages can have the effect of reducing those negative ones that tend to float around in our head which accompany fear.  Ex: "I am a fun person to be around.  After all, I like me.  My BF likes me, my friends like me.  Yes, I AM fun to be with.

And, if you need other positive messages, here are a few links:

So, you CAN do this and you will enjoy your time there.

    Be well & Bon fortune.
