  1. DVR or digital voice recorder, lets you listen to the lecture over again. I hear that most professors let you use those, which is good since I have mild arthritis in my hands and taking notes constantly would be h**l! You can get one for about $30 I believe.

  2. Recording, as many people have already pointed out, is a very good way to make sure that you hear the whole lecture.  Another person mentioned coming up with some kind of shorthand to make sure that you don't have to write down the entirety of each word, which can save time, and then rewrite the notes later the whole way, which is a great way to help get the information in your head.  There are some teachers that do allow you to bring in computers so that you can type the notes to the lecture since typing is much faster than writing.  You'd probably have to discuss that with your teacher though as many schools are also wireless accessible.  Hope these help.

  3. What I always do is think about why I am going to the class. What am I here to learn, what do I want to learn? Then I set up charts. For example we were learning how to disect a frog w/ a 6th grade classroom and they were giving notes about disecting the frog and the approriate way to do it w/ 6th graders so I set up charts that said

    Steps of disecting frogs

    Things to remember

    Tools

    Hints

Important way to teach how to disect frog.

Then I listened carefully to when they spoke about the certain parts and thats when I would record it in that section of the notes.

Why I like this way so much is because it keeps your notes very organized and easy to understand when you are home on the couch trying to study for the test you are having the next day. Another easier, more typical way to take notes is to simply just write in paragraph or bullet form as they speak about each part but I find this is more confusing to look at and study from when you are at home and it is the only reference you have. Also some people really can't or have a very very hard time reading notes that are out of order or randomized in paragraph form which does no good of the class or taking the notes.

I hope this helped, it always helped me years ago when I took lecture classes. They are tough and hard to get through but I think you can do it if you really put your mind to it!

  4. Walter Pauk at Cornell came up with an invaluable tool. used nationwide: (Cornell notes)

  5. Use  a recording device or if u are quick in writing thats worth it as u then can jot down points & later write it in expansion. So ur writing skills and hearing skills are both working i n harmony

  6. If you want to be able to write notes faster you should try writing everything but take out all the vowles in a word and use abreviations for smaller words such as at=@ and by using numbers when you can example: b4, 2, l8 . You can make up some of your own to make it easier. Then when you're done writing notes in your made-up shorthand (if you really want to, this can be helpful in learning the material) you could re-write the notes fully, this will ensure that you have all the information in an easier-to-read version and by re-writing the notes you review the material so you'll have a better grasp on the lesson.
