We're taking a 7-night Bed & Breakfast trip to Ireland in October, flying into Shannon. Problem is, we'd like to go to Cong, Dublin, and Cork but are wondering if that's too much driving. Any suggestions? Also, how much money do you think two people would spend?

  1. Personally, I was terrified to drive in Ireland. The train is an excellent option. You can cross the country from Galway to Dublin in just three hours. The price of the train was about the same as gas, but you could sleep and there was no getting lost.

    Good luck!

  2. From shannon dublin wud be 3 hours cork would be 4 and cong should be one  so no

  3. We took a similar trip and handled the trip just fine. We did run into an unexpected glitch, we use our Platinum Visa to cover rental car insurance and in Ireland it's not valid. Our costs went up a great deal because of that, expect an additional $300 approximately. We estimated costs per day at about $300 assuming shared room, car, golf, food, entry fees etc. This might be more like $400 per day with the Euro 30% higher. My husband and I found the sources below very helpful.

  5. The trip should not be too taxing.  Shannon to Cong would take about 4 hours.  Then Cong ( Mayo ) to Dublin about another 4 hours.  Dublin to Cork is a very good motorway but will take maybe 5 hours. then Cork to Shannon about 2 hours.

You appear to be going around the  perimeter of the country, which is the shortest route.

Gas , petrol is about 1.30 euro a litre, which will yield about 8 miles, so you have a big budget for fuel.

Be very careful driving at first, because we drive on the left hand side of the road and may take some getting used to.

When you are in the Dublin region do not miss out on the chance to visit Newgrange, it's about 25 miles north, near the village of Donore.  It has the wow factor. Find it on google.

In all I would budget for 200 euro each per day.

    Enjoy the visit.
