  1. Yes!  We stayed there in August.  The location was really good - and only about a 10 minute stroll from the train station.  The room was extremely clean, bright and the staff was very helpful.  As a plus, Monterosso has a bustling "old town" with a good selection of restaurants in all price ranges.  Most of the time we were on the hiking trails.  I'd gladly answer any questions you have.

  2. I go to Cinque Terre a couple of times a year and stay in Monterosso. The only place that I've actually stayed at is the Porto Rocca which is a very nice 4 star situated above and a just at the edge of the town along the path to Vernazza. It has a private section of the beach available and nice views from the outdoor tables on the terrace restaurant. The Villa degli Argentieri is the other 4 star option and is supposed to be very nice also.

There's a lot of good information on Cinque Terre at: http://www.cinqueterre.it/en/index.asp and http://www.cinqueterreonline.com/. You can fill two days just exploring the five small towns and spending a little time at the beach. I would recommend that you hike the paths between the cities for great views of the towns and the Ligurian Sea. It's useful to get a day pass for the trains to get back to Monterosso from the other towns if you do the hike. The trains are the fastest way between the 5 towns, but not very scenic since most of the route is through tunnels. There are also boats between some of the towns.
