Question:

We're going to Costa Rica. Should I take a skirt or dress?

We're taking our first trip to Costa Rica. I am very excited. I know I will need shorts and lightweight pants, plus a rainjacket. I would like to take a skirt and matching top to wear at night, to be a bit more dressy. I would like to fit in with what locals are wearing if possible, and to be comfortable and hopefully look nice.

What clothing would those of you who've traveled to Costa Rica recommend?

All answers appreciated, thank you!

  1. you actually can bring ANYTHING you want to wear, it all works! but the one thing you HAVE to bring is BUG REPELLANT!!!!! im totally serious, you can wear jeans, a skirt, a dress, spaghetti stap shirt, but you must have bug repellant, it a key survival item! good luck and have fun!

  2. I bring summer dresses, cotton tee's and tank tops.  A couple of pairs of jean skorts (jean skirt with shorts sewn in) and some comfortable sandals.  The climate is very hot & humid.  The locals dress just like any "american" would.  You'll be surprised how current they are in fashion. They wear brand name clothing too. You don't want to overpack so bring liteweight clothing. During the day you can wear t-shirts,shorts,sneakers as long as you feel comfy.

I going in July and I've already started packing !!

  3. The folks at this site will provide you with a lot of information. Have them call you and ask them to mail it to you.

They also have wonderful beach front land at unbelievable prices. You don't need to buy anything, just let them provide you with details.

    Hope this helps.

  4. welcome to costa rica'. you can dress the usual over here. a nice dress or a skirt would do. don't worry about that much and just lay back and enjoy the ride. costa rica is an adventure. take care

  5. Make sure you bring something good for the rain because its rainy season. Also think about some good shoes for the rain.

  6. Yes bring  skirts  and/or dersses.  At dances the ladies get ALL DOLLED UP.  Ticas like to dress pretty.

  7. I'm in Heredia, Costa Rica right now (outside San Jose) and I never see anyone wearing shorts. I brought some, but then I went and bought jeans instead.  Everyone is really dressed up.  I see skirts more often than dresses, but I think if you wear a dress you will blend right in.  The one thing i noticed is that they wear a lot of slip on, loafer type shoes, so of course i went out and bought some too.  I understand what you mean about wanting to look like everyone else! Have a great trip! And don't forget your umbrella....ever! :)

  8. Don't dress too flashy. Jewelry is a no-no, especially in the cities. Do not call attention to yourself -robbery is the biggest crime in the cities. The country people are more honorable. You must wear long pants or a skirt in the city but, in the country, you can wear anything you like. Bring a sun hat, sun glasses, tan lotion, sandals, shorts, bathing suits, nothing real dressy.

  9. What you mention will fit in very well with the local population as that is exactly how they dress when they go out on the town!

Costa Ricans for the most part dress just like Americans do! And unless they are actually talking you would never know who was who despite the fact that over 50% of them speak English.

Just do not expect to see any natives with long grass skirts and loin cloths!  - you will be very disappointed!
