better to stay near the coliseum. we did, we were in walking distant to everything. there is a bus running to the vatican all the time. free. we booked with a agencies to see the vatican. we boarded the bus at 6-45am. stood in line for a hour to get in.you get a guide to take you, you have to do this to get there. otherwise the ques can be so long if you are any later.. its worth the look. my advice to you also, is watchout for pickpockets, the place is the worse for it. there are lots of people on the streets begging for money also. please becareful.. wear a money bag that cant be seen. bon voyage.

I did a study abroad in Rome about a year ago and I lived near the Vatican for a few months.  It was really nice there, good shopping and food, and close to the metro station so you can get anywhere else fast.

While many people are attracted to the Vatican area, it doesn't offer the best selection of hotels. Hotels in this area are also somewhat isolated. The Coliseum area, on the other side of town, has much greater selection and is also closer to many more of the things tourists want to do while in Rome.

Such as, (obviously), the Coliseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Venezia, Spanish Steps, the Catacombs, etc.

You can spend one day at the Vatican, but the rest of the time you can focus on the rest of Rome, which is considerable.

Probably the Coliseum, but also think of the Spanish Steps, they are in the heart of the shopping district and in the center of town.

stay near the vatican. more attractions nearby. st. peter's basilica, spanish steps, trevvy fountain, the pantheon. you can take the underground train to the coliseum. or walk there if you like. takes about like 30minutes of walking from the vatican to the coliseum.
