  1. I've only been to Rome, parts of Tuscany, and Florence, but I was told that Venice is best spent as a day trip from Florence (it's about 2.5 hours away).  You can find tours that take you from Florence early in the morning.

  2. While in Venice (Venezia), take a ride in the romantic gondola, visit the nearby island of Murano for exquisite colored glass creations, and take a 1 hour side trip to the city of Verona to see Juliet's house and the balcony beneath which Romeo proposed.  Yes 2-3 days is sufficient.  Then head to Florence (Firenze), my favorite city in Italy.

  3. Venice doesn't have many "sights" - the whole city is an incredibly beautiful and unique place.  The Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Church are the only real must-see sights.  One full day is really enough to see it.

However, the city gets very crowded with tourists from 10 AM to 4 PM, so by far the best times to walk around are just after dawn and just before dusk, so it is worth staying overnight so you can experience the city without massive crowds everywhere.  I would avoid the area between St. Mark's and the train station during midday.

You could spend up to three days there - and also see the Academia Museum and the outer islands of Murano (known for its traditional glasswork and many glassblowers still work there), Burano (colorful fishing houses and lace workers), and Torcello (mosaics).

  4. You should see the Grand Canal, Piazza San Marco and the museums.

    2-3 days are enough.
