How can we maximize the 2 days (it will just be a stopover for us)? Which places do you suggest for us to go? We're planning on visiting Rome but I was hoping we could also visit Milan.

  1. only two days, well Rome will really keep you more than entertained for 2 days, there is so much to see there, I know you probably really would like to get 2 cities in but Milan is quite far from Rome and you would be spending so much time (out of your 2 days on a train) So I would recommend just being happy with Rome (I am sure you will be) and plan another trip back to see more, or finding a town (like Tivoli) or city that is closer to Rome so you won't have to spend too much time traveling. Have fun!

  2. Where are you coming in?  If its Rome, that will fill 2 days by itself.  Same with Venice (Venezia) or almost any other city.  Also depends on what interests you.

  3. Just stay in Rome and you will wish you had longer than two days there!  I've been three times and adore it.  The Trevi Fountain by night is an absolute must see.

I have been to Milan and found it disappointing.

  4. If you only have two days, then you should pick one specific city and focus on that - whereever you're flying through. The travel will eat up of the time you have for sightseeing otherwise. Milan is 4 and a half hours from Rome on the fastest trains.

There's much more in Rome than you could cover in two days, but you could get a decent overview of the city in that time. Focus on the things that most interest you. You will have time to see the ancient Rome attractions, the fountains and squares, the Vatican, etc. Some places have rather long lines to get in though - the Vatican museum and the Colosseum, for example. If you want to see more than the outside, reserve a time so you don't waste a lot of time in lines. Get a day or two pass for the transportation system. Personally, I prefer walking because there's so much to see and do, but if you have an agenda of the things you want to see, you can get from point-to-point faster using the metro and buses if you have big distances between your objectives.

Put together a list of the places you want to visit and plan out a route on the map before you go. This is something you could do to occupy some time on a long flight.
